What Cupping Is

Cupping is when the edges of each floorboard rise higher than the center, giving the floor a washboard feel. It happens because the bottom of the board absorbs more moisture than the top — the bottom swells, the edges lift. In homes over a crawl space, that moisture is usually rising from below.

Why Refinishing Alone Fails

Sanding cupped floors flat without fixing the moisture is one of the most common — and most wasted — flooring expenses we see. The sander removes the symptom. The damp crawl space keeps feeding the cause. Within a year or two, the floors cup again, and now there is less wood left to sand. Fix the moisture first; refinish second.

The Crawl Space Connection

Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture with the air around it. A damp crawl space keeps the underside of your subfloor and floorboards perpetually moist. Summer is the worst: humid air pours through open vents, condenses on the cool wood, and the floors drink it up. Drying the crawl space — barrier, sealed vents, dehumidifier — cuts the supply, and the floors stabilize.

Will the Floors Flatten on Their Own?

Sometimes, partially. Once the moisture source is gone, boards can relax back toward flat over several months — especially with stable indoor humidity. Severe, long-term cupping may not fully reverse, and then refinishing makes sense — after the crawl space is dry. We always recommend waiting a season after the moisture fix before deciding on floor work.

The Order That Works

One: inspect the crawl space and confirm the moisture source. Two: dry it — encapsulation or the barrier-vent-dehumidifier system your space needs. Three: wait and watch the floors for a season. Four: refinish only if needed, on dry, stable wood. This order saves floors and money.

Frequently Asked Questions

My floors cup every summer and flatten in winter. Is that the crawl space?

Almost certainly — that seasonal cycle tracks crawl space humidity exactly. Drying the space breaks the cycle.

Should I run a dehumidifier upstairs instead?

It treats the symptom in the room, not the source below. The moisture keeps coming until the crawl space is addressed.

How long after drying before I refinish?

Give it a full season — wood moves slowly. Refinishing on still-drying wood risks a repeat.
